    Answer: No, the kit does not require a battery.
  • Question: Where can I mount the control box?

    Answer: You can mount the control box wherever you want for easy and discreet control of the mute functionality. The compact design allows for simple and clean installation.
  • Question: How long are the wires?

    Answer: The power/ground to the unit is 48 inches, the cable from the unit to radar detector is 116 inches.
  • Question: What gauge wire is this?

    Answer: It is RJ-11 type wire like for phones. It should be 22 gauge wire.
  • Question: Does the end of this fit a fuse tap?

    Answer: The kit I received had multiple fuse designs that the square end you reference plugs into.
  • Question: What is the reason for the massive spike in price for this item?

    Answer: Perhaps the pandemic was the cause but for me its worth more than that. I had to pay 10more usd for overseas shipping because I knew It will not be a full function without it.
  • Question: Any idea what size the positive spade terminal is on this kit?

    Answer: Standard size, not miniature.
  • Question: Has anyone ran into the problem where they hook up the detector and the mute button lights up, but the R3 Unit doesn’t light up or work?

    Answer: I would check the polarity of the electrical splice. If that checks out, and the Radar detector operates fine with the factory cigarette lighter power cord, then you have a bad hardwire kit.
  • Question: Is it compatible with the Uniden DFR8?

    Answer: Yes, it should work with the DFR8 since that model uses the same power adapter as does the DFR7, which is expressly supported by this kit.
  • Question: Can the Uniden R1 be connected directly to 12v?

    Answer: Yes, the unit can be powered with this hardwire kit, or the 12v DC charger.

Uniden Radar Detectors Editorial Review

The Uniden hardwire kit is a great addition to any Uniden R Series radar detector. The kit is easy to install, hides the wires well, and includes a switch that is used only for the mute function. The kit also includes standard size positive spade terminals and is compatible with Uniden DFR8. Double-clicking its mute button should save 'mute' locations where up to 8 detected frequencies may be stored. However, installation requires full re-wiring, which can be a bit of a hassle. Overall, a great addition to a radar detector if you want a clean installation.
