Henüz Yeni Mecmua'da tefrika edildiği sırada (1940-41) dönemin baskıcı siyasi ortamında sakıncalı bulunup roman olarak yayımcı bulmakta zorlanacak ve Sait Faik'in annesinin maddi desteğiyle Ahmet İhsan Basımevi'nden 1944'te yayımlanacaktır. Ancak dağıtılmaya başlanmışken bakanlar kurulu kararıyla toplatılan roman, kimi paragrafları çıkarılarak Birtakım İnsanlar adıyla 1952 yılında okuyucusuna kavuşur. İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları olarak Medarı Maişet Motoru üzerinde yıllardır süren sansürü kaldırıyor ve tehlikeli bulunarak çıkarılan kısımları koyu harflerle vererek yapıtı eksiksiz bir şekilde sunuyoruz.
